When facing a deadly threat from a committed enemy, it’s no time to distort reality just to indulge emotional pettiness. To prevail, you need a clear rational mind capable of ruthless evaluation and calculation – and you can be sure that that’s what your enemy strives for. It’s no time for childishly emotional thinking, wailing about “liberals”, “political correctness”, “Muslims are evil”, ‘government sucks”, and other silliness. Terrorism is deadly serious.
I find the comments on this topic troubling. I don’t have a stake in this – if he’s a terrorist then he is, and if not then he isn’t. But it seems a lot of people REALLY WANT to call him a terrorist – no matter how much watering down is required to make that label apply. It’s troubling because I suspect it’s driven by anti-Muslim hatred. It’s also troubling because losing focus on who our enemies really are (a consequence of indulging such emotions) is a HUGE mistake.
So far, that doesn’t add up to terrorism. Of course they need to investigate thoroughly to learn his true motivation, but the point is that there IS a truth to be found here. So far it looks like a stressed lunatic on a murder rampage a lot more than a terrorist act. Again, compare Hasan to the killer of liberals in Knoxville – you can be sure that guy had exposure to rightwing extremists, and hated liberals, but that doesn’t make him a rightwing terrorist, does it?
If I recall correctly: He attended one of the largest mosques on the East Coast years ago. An imam there (now in Yemen) had/has connections to Al Qaeda (running a front charity to raise funds) and gave extremist speeches (still does, over the internet). The mosque was huge, and had two 9-11 hijackers, but also hundreds of people not considered a threat by the FBI. Hasan exchanged emails with the imam in Yemen (that were read by some intelligence branch), but with nothing sinister in them.
Now if this wold have happened in the hood with a christian white cop —- obama would be having a beer with him!

Geraldo Rivera is the worst thing to ever happened to Fox News, he should be on msnbc. In almost every case he makes concessions and gives excuses for the perpetrator. That is what Chris Matthews and the liberals do on msnbc! Hasan was a terrorist and should be treated like a terrorist! The only thing obama wants is for everyone to think this was a crime instead of a terrorist attack because he and his administration will be held responsible for there incompetence!
MP’s should be on close patrol at the very least. Anyway the muslims are on the “hunt” crazy or not so I think there is needed alertness here in the US just as this shooting has proven.(why was he allowed a gun – do they not checkpoint officers?)
Good grief. They could investigate a large fart for YEARS. This was simple terrorism as the definition tells us. The guy has been anti-American for years and not even questioned about it. The soldiers should have been armed on a base as well.
What about the Egyptian pilot of a planeload of Americans out of New York in 1999 who shut off the engines, and then praised Allah as they all went to their deaths in the Atlantic? The “ACCIDENT” was called a SUICIDE. WHAT??

He attended the same Muslim mosque as two of the 911 attackers, the leader at that mosque made a statement saying he did a great thing. He has been attempting to get in contact with Al Queada, and identifies himself as a SOA, Soldier of Alahh, and when he did this he shouted Allah Ackbar or whatever the Al Queada yell all the time. He was a Muslim Extremist Terrorist. Screw politically correct and being nice, that’ what he was.

I’ve no problem calling a terrorist a terrorist (regardless the ideological end “justifying” their means). I DO have a problem with scumbags like Coulter and the neocon who will exploit any situation to achieve their transparent goals – increasing American anger, fear, and anti-Islamic sentiment. It’s DANGEROUS to the country to misidentify its actual enemies, or to loose sight of what terrorism actually is, but that, of course, is what Coulter and the neocon hope for.
What of the nut who killed two and wounded five at Knoxville church last year? The guy killed for no reason other than he thought they were liberals. Were Coulter and the that neocon think tank (FDD) guy on Fox to arguing that is should be called an example of rightwing terrorism? I’m gonna guess “no”.
Both cases are apparently about stressed lunatics on a killing spree, not terrorism. That hateful rhetoric and ideology influenced them doesn’t magically change that into terrorism.

IMHO, just because he alledgedly yelled “Allah Akbar” does not make him a “terrorist”. I agree with Geraldo. He was a spree killer but the fringe conservatives want to call him a terrorist only because he was an extremist Muslim. We have extremist Christians bombing abortion clinics, killing abortion doctors but I’ve never heard them called terrorists.
